چکیده

We report on the discovery of a diffuse X-ray source with ASCA, presumably associated with a molecular cloud in the vicinity of the supernova remnant RX J1713.7−3946. The energy spectrum (1–10 keV) of the hard X-ray source shows a flat continuum, which is described by a power-law with a photon index of Γ = 1.0 −0.3. We argue that this unusually flat spectrum can be best interpreted in terms of characteristic bremsstrahlung emission from the loss-flattened distribution of either sub-relativistic protons or mildly relativistic electrons. The strong shock of RX J1713.7−3946, which is likely to interact with the molecular cloud, as evidenced by CO-line observations, seems to be a natural site of acceleration of such nonthermal particles. The observed luminosity of LX = 1.7× 10 35 erg s (for a distance of 6 kpc) seems to require a huge kinetic energy of about 10 erg in the form of nonthermal particles to illuminate the cloud. The shock-acceleration at RX J1713.7−3946 can barely satisfy this energetic requirement, unless (i) the source is located much closer than the preferred distance of 6 kpc and/or (ii) the mechanical energy of the supernova explosion essentially exceeds 10 erg. Another possibility would be that an essential part of the lost energy due to the ionization and heating of gas, is somehow converted to plasma waves, which return this energy to nonthermal particles through their turbulent reacceleration on the plasma waves.

No evidence yet for hadronic TeV gamma-ray emission from SNR RX J1713-3946

Recent TeV-scale γ-ray observations with the CANGAROO II telescope have led to the claim that the multi-band spectrum of RX J1713.7-3946 cannot be explained as the composite of a synchrotron and an inverse Compton component emitted by a population of relativistic electrons. It was argued that the spectrum of the high-energy emission is a good match to that predicted by pion decay, thus providin...

The multi - band nonthermal emission from the supernova remnant RX J 1713 . 7 - 3946

Nonthermal X-rays and very high-energy (VHE) γ-rays have been detected from the supernova remnant (SNR) RX J1713.7-3946, and especially the recent observations with the Suzaku satellite clearly reveal a spectral cutoff in the X-ray spectrum, which directly relates to the cutoff of the energy spectrum of the parent electrons. However, whether the origin of the VHE γ-rays from the SNR is hadronic...

Nonthermal X-radiation of SNR RX J1713.7−3946: The Relations to a Nearby Molecular Cloud

The recent X-ray and CO observations of RX J1713.7−3946 show that a significant fraction of the nonthermal X-ray emission of this unique supernova remnant associates, in one way or another, with a molecular cloud interacting with the west part of the shell. This adds a new puzzle in the origin of X-ray emission which cannot be easily explained within the standard model in accordance of which X-...

Evidence for TeV gamma - ray emission from the shell type SNR RX J 1713 . 7 − 3946

We report the results of TeV gamma-ray observations of the shell type SNR RX J1713.7−3946 (G347.3−0.5). The discovery of strong non-thermal X-ray emission from the northwest part of the remnant strongly suggests the existence of electrons with energies up to ∼ 100 TeV in the remnant, making the SNR a good candidate TeV gamma-ray source. We observed RX J1713.7−3946 from May to August 1998 with t...

On the Gamma-ray Spectra Radiated by Protons Accelerated in Supernova Remnant Shocks near Molecular Clouds: the Case of Supernova Remnant Rx J1713.7!3946

Cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be accelerated in supernova remnants (SNRs). The most favorable situation for proving that the main, hadronic CR component is accelerated there is when CRs interact with dense gases, such as molecular clouds (MCs) that surround the SN shock. Here, a new mechanism of spectrum formation in partially ionized gases near SNRs is proposed. Using an analytic model of n...
